Goal 1: To be knowledgeable about research in aspects of distance education and the use of telecommunications in educational and other settings.
To successfully meet goal one, we were given several opportunities to gain knowledge about research in distance education. We were given the link to the e-book Theory and Practice of Online Learning and we conducted individual analysis as well as group analysis of the chapters. During the group discussions we were facilitated by our peers who encouraged insightful reflections of the text and the application of the text to our lives. In the group discussions, I was allowed to voice my opinions and views of the text as well as grow from other people's views. The video presentations of our analysis of the chapters, we were given the opportunity to utilize technology to present our understanding of the text. The presentations were not only meant for summarizing the text. In the presentations we were also asked to provide ways the text effects us. Lastly, to sum up the course we were assigned a research synthesis project. For this project we were asked to pick a topic relating to distance education and find research articles on the topic. This assignment allowed me to focus on something I enjoy and become an expert in that area.
These assignments were important because it gave us the opportunity to reflect on what we learned and we were also given the opportunity to gain from the knowledge of others. Now that I have this knowledge, I can apply it to my professional life, whether it is with my colleagues during our PLC or mentoring high school students about life after high school.
